“…let’s promote this fascinating game of Igo…!”

Xinwen and Shao Lun believed that the ever first Go Club in Brunei was established by them in 2005 in Maktab Duli, Pre-University.

Without appropriate go equipments, the committee members had to start off by buying few sets of Othello board. Xinwen’s objective of setting up this club is purely just to promote the game of Igo instead of going world-wide ambitious domination at present [just-kidding].

Basically the 1st-gen means the 1st batch of members (2005) to join the Go Club and they are: Sin Voon, Shao Lun, Yung Shin, Peng Hui, Evelyn Liaw, Yi Hui, Tsu Tak, Joyce, Setphanie Sim, Ameng, Howard Leong, Yau Yen, Wei Zheng and etc. Sadly say, Peng Hui is said to be the only active player left.

Until the 2006, the 2nd-gen members were better as a whole than than the 1st-gen and they are: Zhe Fan, Chiao Hong, Si Xiang, Han Yean, Lydia, Queenie, Devish How, Haidar, Radhiah and etc. The year also when Xinwen had a dream to go bigger, step deeper bringing the devoteful member along with him.

*The great story begins in 2007*

Xinwen, then contacted the International Go Federation and request guidance and assistance. This was the year, when Xinwen had earned from his hardworks – got invited to Korea and SEA GAMES.

The 3rd-gen member [2007] had more enthusiast and loyalty members such as Hui Chee, Chung Sun, Chiaw Yee, Hua Lik, Hui Yee, Ho Soon and etc. They were all considerably active in KGS and managed to reach balancely to 7-kyu.

The Society had a banner that will be given to the members of every year for signatures – to mark the existence of passion in the game of Go.

*4th-gen, Foundation*

One of the greatest achievement in 2008, that more locals (malays) had started to learn the game of Igo! With the passionate members such as Zidah, Sarinah, Afiq, Ramizah, Jien Hann and etc. Xinwen strongly believed that the future of Go in Brunei cannot be so much vague as before.

2008, was also the year that members of the Igo Society brought and participate their very first International Tournament in Korea and Nanning, China.

*PTEK Go Club*

After certain unknown issue, most of the existing members from Maktab Duli Go Club had been transferred to the new pre-university college, Katok.

The Katok Go Club is in charge by Afiq and Zidah. It is heard that the go club is very lively and the juniors like the game of Igo a lot.

Xinwen will be leaving Malaysia on the 19th of May and be seeing the new members in near future…

“…why should i not be the first to set up the Go Association, instead of asking why isn’t there anyone setting up one in Brunei?…”

On 25th of April, 2009, It was perhaps the most important day of the league of Xinwen is to play against his so called “rival”, Philip Cher. According to the league results, Xinwen had only won 5 games (Suzanne, Zhi Wei, Dennis, Shu Wen and Chyn) which considerably having a poor performances in comparison of Philip’s results (Mr.Tiong, Billy, Zhi Wei, Dennis, Shu Wen, Chyn, Jimmy).

Hock Doong, had volunteered honorary as the game’s recorder and judge and deligated the lecture’s duty to Dennis.

Hock doong: “i entitled this game, century game.” and began the war between Xinwen and Philip.

The game was thought to go on nicely with Xinwen’s tactics in mind “playing conventional theory, outside” until he made an atari at move “72” which when he had changed mind to “let’s fight!”. To certain extend, Xinwen thought answering the move “63” was a mistake.

Lastly, despite knowing Xinwen had already lost the game, he decided to play to this suffocating war and lost in pride. Thus, Philip had granted his 8-wins in the League.

Dennis had been delegated by Hock Doong honorary to replace and to give lecture to the participants: Fazzy, Shino, Seng Chea and Azam.

The lecture covered the topic of: Snap Back, Fundamental of connection and shape, Cutting and Reviewing of last exercises.

Special announcement, Xinwen had requested to offer a free special lecture on the 16th of May to the participants.

Second lecture by Hock Doong

*Lesson two*

The second lecture was commenced on the 18th of April, 2009. Hock Doong’s again as the lecturer, and the attendants were Azam, Ah Tek, Shino and Michael.

The lecture began with an problems and solution shown in the picture, also to help to improve the beginner’s thinking in killing opponent’s stones in a cleaner way. Chances in participation was also well given to the audiences in solving life and death questions.

The lecture comprises:-
1) Reviewing Introductory Problems level one.
2) Living and dead shape
3) Mutual live (seki)
4) Dead Spaces
5) The theory of Bend “4”

Some of the fundamental living and dead shape shown were discussed during the lecture. It is utmost important for beginner to understand the pattern of living and dying shape.

After the lecture, Hock Doong had also recommend the participants to have a chance to grab the book: Elementary Go series, volume 4 of Life and Death (book)by James Davies (1996), Kiseido Publishing Company.

MWA giving their first lecture!

Malaysia Weiqi Association had been going through a long degree of discussion to create a Go class so called “beginner class” for years during their Annual General Meeting. Hock Doong having the qualification been appointed to take the responsibility to create syallabus and to become the teacher!

On the 11th of April, there were quite number of participants attended in the lecture:- Azam, Ah Teik, Shino, Seng Chea, Fazy and Xinwen had volunteered to record the lecture outline given by Hock Doong. Exercises (Introductory problems level one) had been given to the participants.

This pattern was shown during the lecture and was asked whether the black or the white has more territory.

At first glance, Xinwen thought it would be white, but the answer was surprisingly black! and black has 15 more points over the White!

*Annual Group Photo Taking*

Ever since 2006 (year of establishment), Xinwen as the founder had decided to make a custom gathering all the members annually and they would have a group photo taking session.

The above picture was taken in December of 2008 with the “remaining” members in Brunei during the Annual Igo Tournament. However, the group photo taking was supposedly planned to take at the Studioplus, Gadong at which it had been done so for the previous years.. Due to the time constraint and budget, the committee had re-allocate the venue at CHMS Alumni Association.

During the December of 2007, it had really shown a tremendous improvement and achievement in the society – the establishment of CHMS Alumni Association Go Club, gotten invited to International Tournament, participated in SEA GAMES. Moreover, of course the members as a whole were at an satisfying level.

Lastly, of course the memorable and the most imperative year of the Society, the 2006. Where they said the “alpha” began.

The establishment of Igo Society had their vision set – to create unity and intergration amongst racial groups, their objective – to promote this ancient game of Go, their ultimate goal – to let brunei acknoledge this game and the society and of course the Go Association.

May this dream burns forever.

*New players in Japan Club*

Lately, there are new players attending Japan Club! It seems like Weiqi in Malaysia is taking move, slowly but efficiently [how?].

*Seng Chea*

Seng Chea, a new player showing up in KGS in the end of March, who is also known as Michael, studying in Segi College just beside Summit Mall in Malaysia.

Started to attend Japan Club for the first time in his life touching real stones and boards [28th March, 2009].Interesting fact is that, he has a japanese cousin who is studying as an Insei in Japan.

Azam, go player from Kuching, Sarawak who is surprisingly having the passion in learning the game. Xinwen first met him through KGS then a true meet up personally in Kuching, New Year.

Azam is currently studying in Taylor’s College, taking up the course of Foundation in Architecture. Xinwen felt quite joyful to be able to play Go with someone who is truly interested.

Moreover, Zhe Fan [kgs:elementary] might be taking enroll to Taylor’s Computing course in July!

Ah Teik, the penang boy who is taking same course as Azam from Taylor’s College, Foundation in Architecture, has started to get interested in the game of Igo and Shogi.

on the 11th, April of 2009. Take-kun visited the Japan Club and taking this wise opportunity, Hock Doong gave a beginner lecture to the new players.

*Adam, a new-comer from Australia*

4th of April, 2009 was indeed a special occasion to mention but oddly to say that there were unusually more go players came.

Adam, a newcomer heard to be Malaysian who just came back from Australia came to Japan Club and requested a Shidou-Go (指導碁). Everyone else were busy and hence, Xinwen had decided to give him a teaching game.

*More new-comers!*

Surprise to witness, there were 2 new players who came to Japan Club themselves for the first time and to play the game of Go! The Shino and Fazy, the interior designer.

Xinwen were overjoyed to find new players swarming Japan Club to learn Go, thus, Xinwen took the responsibility himself to teach Shino and Fazy that day.
